Being Unsure About Kids Is More Common Than You Think

"I'm judged for not knowing if I do or don't want kids" is a sentiment that resonates with many people in their twenties and thirties. The pressure to have a clear answer about parenthood can feel overwhelming, especially when friends, family, and even strangers expect you to have made up your mind.

The truth is that ambivalence about having children is completely normal. For plenty of people, the decision doesn't come as a sudden revelation or a firm stance they've held since childhood. Instead, it arrives gradually, sometimes after years of uncertainty. Many adults report that they simply did not know their own decision until it was already made, whether that meant becoming a parent or choosing not to.

Society tends to treat the question of having kids as a binary choice that everyone should have figured out by a certain age. But human lives are messier than that. Circumstances change. Relationships shift. Financial situations evolve. What feels right at twenty-five might feel completely different at thirty-five, and that is okay.

The judgment that comes with not knowing can be exhausting. People on both sides of the fence often feel pressure to defend their position. Those who are unsure get caught in the middle, facing questions about their timeline, their reasons, and their maturity. But being uncertain does not mean being indecisive or immature. It often means being honest about the complexity of such a life-altering choice.

Perhaps the healthiest approach is to allow yourself the space to not know. The decision about whether to have children is deeply personal and does not require a deadline. Some people will always feel ambivalent, and that ambivalence is a valid emotional state, not a failure to commit.
