The concept of sharing a bathroom with strangers has long been a source of discomfort for many Americans. This aversion, often called "brooding" over bathroom privacy, runs deeper than simple shyness. It touches on cultural norms, personal boundaries, and even how we view vulnerability.
In the United States, private bathrooms are seen as a basic right. From single-occupancy restrooms in homes to stalls with floor-to-ceiling doors in public spaces, the design reinforces the idea that elimination is a solitary act. When faced with shared facilities, like those in hostels, gyms, or some workplaces, many people feel exposed. This reaction is not universal. In many other countries, communal bathing and open toilet stalls are common, and people adapt without much thought.
The discomfort often stems from a fear of judgment. Americans are taught from a young age that bathroom activities are private and even slightly shameful. Sharing that space can feel like a loss of control over one's image. However, some argue that facing this discomfort can be a small but meaningful exercise in acceptance. It forces a person to let go of perfectionism and acknowledge that everyone has the same basic needs. By training the imagination to see shared spaces as neutral rather than threatening, a person can build a stronger sense of connection to others. It becomes a practice in humility and a reminder that love and acceptance start with the ordinary, not the ideal.
