Parenting advice is everywhere, and now artificial intelligence wants a seat at the table. The promise sounds appealing: a tireless assistant that can help you handle tantrums, plan birthday parties, or explain why the sky is blue for the hundredth time. But the reality is more complicated than the hype.

There are genuinely useful ways the technology can help with this. For example, AI can generate creative meal plans for picky eaters, draft a polite note to a teacher, or suggest age-appropriate book lists in seconds. It can also help you reframe a stressful situation by offering a calm, neutral perspective when you are too emotionally drained to think straight. Some parents use it to practice difficult conversations with teens or to translate school documents into their native language. That is real value.

However, the recent advice from Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, misses the mark. His ChatGPT tips for parents are not among them. He suggested using the chatbot as a sort of co-parent, asking it to help decide discipline strategies or to mediate family arguments. That is a mistake. AI does not know your child. It does not know the look on their face when they are about to cry, nor does it understand the history behind a sibling rivalry. Handing over judgment calls to a language model strips parenting of its most essential ingredient: human intuition.

The best use of AI is as a tool, not a replacement. Use it for the boring, repetitive tasks that drain your energy. Let it brainstorm ideas, write the permission slip, or organize a weekly chore chart. But when it comes to bedtime hugs, hard talks, and the messy, unpredictable moments that shape a family, keep the phone down. Your kid needs you, not a chatbot.
