Don't outsource the best parts of parenting to AI

There is a growing push to bring artificial intelligence into every corner of family life. Some new tools promise to help parents write better bedtime stories, answer endless questions, or even mediate arguments between siblings. But there is a line we should not cross. The most valuable moments with your children are the ones where you are actually present, listening, and thinking together. Handing those over to a machine is a mistake.

I get the appeal. Parenting is exhausting. The laundry piles up, the school emails never stop, and the calendar is a mess. I would happily let an AI handle the scheduling, sort the permission slips, or remind me when to buy more snack bars. Those tasks are tedious. They drain energy that could go toward being a better parent. If a tool can take that off my plate, great.

But the fun parts are not chores. The silly questions your kid asks at dinner, the made-up games in the car, the long talks about why a friend acted a certain way, those are the moments that build trust and memory. If you outsource those to an AI, you lose the chance to know your child. You also lose the chance to let them know you. A machine can generate a clever response, but it cannot replace the sound of your voice, your hesitation, your laugh, or your own stories.

The real risk is not that AI will do a bad job. It will do a fine job. That is the problem. It will be too easy to let it take over the parts that matter most. So use the tools for the boring stuff. Keep the conversations for yourself. That is where the good stuff lives.
