Four Phrases Parents Should Steer Clear of After School—and Their Alternatives

Four Phrases Parents Should Steer Clear of After School—and Their Alternatives

After a long day at school, children often come home with a mix of emotions and experiences. However, certain phrases can inadvertently shut down communication and create barriers between parents and their kids. Experts suggest that parents should be mindful of their language to foster a more open dialogue.

One common phrase to avoid is, "How was your day?" While well-intentioned, this question can lead to vague responses. Instead, parents might ask, "What was the best part of your day?" This encourages children to share positive experiences.

Another phrase to reconsider is, "Did you learn anything today?" This can feel overwhelming. Instead, try asking, "What was something that surprised you today?" This invites curiosity and deeper conversation.

Additionally, saying, "You should have tried harder" can be discouraging. A more supportive approach would be, "What do you think you could do differently next time?" This promotes problem-solving and resilience.

Lastly, avoid asking, "Why didn't you finish your homework?" which can come off as accusatory. Instead, ask, "What challenges did you face with your homework?" This opens the door for discussion and understanding. By choosing words carefully, parents can create a nurturing environment that encourages their children to express themselves freely.
