When a hurricane warning hits, the stress can feel overwhelming, especially for parents trying to keep everyone safe. I have been through several storms with my own kids, and I have learned that the best preparation is a simple, repeatable plan. You do not need a binder full of checklists. You need a few clear steps that work even when the power is out and the wind is howling.
Start by making a family communication plan. Write down one out-of-state contact who everyone can call or text to say they are safe. Local lines get jammed, but long-distance texts often go through. Practice this with your kids so they know the number by heart. For younger children, explain the plan without scaring them. Use calm language like "we are getting ready for a big rainstorm so we can stay cozy inside."
Next, prepare a simple go-bag. Keep it in a closet near the door. Include a flashlight with extra batteries, a portable phone charger, a first-aid kit, and a few bottles of water. For kids, add a comfort item like a stuffed animal or a deck of cards. This helps them feel secure when the house gets dark and noisy.
Finally, stay connected without relying on the internet. A battery-powered weather radio is worth its weight in gold. Charge all devices before the storm, and use text messages instead of calls to save battery. If the power goes out, gather the family in one room, play a quiet game, and keep the mood light. The goal is not to be perfect. The goal is to be prepared enough so that when the storm comes, you can focus on what matters most: keeping your family calm and safe.
