An estimated 1.7 million adults between the ages of 24 and 34 still live with their parents. For many, the decision is not a sign of laziness or failure, but a practical response to a housing market that feels impossible to crack. I am one of them. I am 24, I have a full-time job, and I still sleep in the bedroom I painted blue when I was twelve.
The biggest misconception is that we are all mooching off our parents, spending our paychecks on takeout and concert tickets. In reality, most of us are saving aggressively. My rent would be at least half my monthly income if I moved out. Instead, I put that money toward a down payment fund and student loans. I cook dinner for my family twice a week. I help with the grocery shopping. It is a trade-off: independence for financial stability.
The hardest part is not the lack of privacy, though that is real. It is the social stigma. When I tell people I live at home, I watch their faces shift. They assume I am immature or that my parents are enabling me. The truth is more boring. My mom and I have a schedule for the bathroom in the morning. We argue about whose turn it is to take out the trash. We also watch movies together on Friday nights.
What does this mean for the stuck-at-home generation? It means delayed milestones. I do not know when I will have my own place. I do not know when I will feel like a real adult. But I do know that this arrangement is not a failure. It is a strategy. And for now, it is working.
