When I discovered my son watching videos from the "manosphere," my initial reaction was one of alarm and disapproval. I instinctively shut down the lines of healthy communication, believing that confronting him would steer him away from such content. However, upon reflection, I realize that this approach was counterproductive.
Instead of fostering an open dialogue, I created a barrier that could lead to further secrecy. My son, feeling judged and misunderstood, might have been less likely to share his thoughts and feelings with me in the future. What I should have done was engage him in conversation about the content he was watching. Asking questions about his interests and opinions could have opened up a constructive discussion, allowing me to understand his perspective better.
By approaching the situation with curiosity rather than condemnation, I could have guided him towards critical thinking and healthy discussions about masculinity and relationships. It's crucial to maintain open lines of communication, especially when navigating complex topics that can shape a young person's worldview.
