Opinion: San Antonio can end child abuse

Every child in San Antonio deserves a safe home and a real chance to thrive. This is not just a wish. It is a goal we can actually reach if we choose to act. Child abuse is not an unsolvable problem. It is a preventable crisis that we have allowed to persist for too long.

The numbers tell a painful story. Too many children in Bexar County suffer from neglect, physical abuse, and emotional trauma each year. These are not just statistics. They are kids sitting in our classrooms, playing in our parks, and living in our neighborhoods. Their pain is hidden behind closed doors, but it is real.

The solution does not require a miracle. It requires us to step up as a community. We need better support for struggling parents. We need affordable child care, mental health services, and home visits for new families. We need neighbors who are willing to speak up when they see something wrong. We need schools and churches and community centers to work together.

San Antonio has the resources and the heart to make this happen. We have strong nonprofits, dedicated social workers, and a city government that can lead the way. But good intentions are not enough. We must fund prevention programs. We must train more people to recognize the signs of abuse. We must create a culture where asking for help is not a sign of failure.

Ending child abuse is not someone else's job. It is ours. Every adult in this city has a role to play. If we commit to protecting our children, we can build a San Antonio where no child has to suffer in silence. The power is in our hands. Let us use it.
