Parents who proudly say 'No screen time' may be missing the point, says leading pediatrician: “It's not some poison”

A prominent pediatrician is pushing back against the trend of parents proudly declaring "zero screen time" for their children. Dr. Michael Rich, founder of the Center on Media and Child Health, argues that the outright demonization of digital devices is both unrealistic and unhelpful. "It's not some poison," he said in a recent interview, urging a more nuanced approach.

Rich, who has studied children's interaction with technology for decades, believes the focus should shift from the quantity of screen time to the quality of content and context. He warns that a blanket ban can backfire, making screens a forbidden fruit and leaving kids unprepared for a world saturated with digital tools. Instead of fighting a losing battle, he suggests parents become active co-pilots. This means watching shows together, discussing what they see online, and teaching critical thinking about algorithms and advertising.

The pediatrician also points out that not all screen time is equal. A child video-calling a grandparent is fundamentally different from one passively scrolling through short videos. The real danger, he says, is not the screen itself but the displacement of other essential activities like sleep, physical play, and face-to-face conversation. Parents who proudly ban screens may be missing the point: the goal is not to eliminate technology but to build a healthy, balanced relationship with it.
