Parent educator Katie Dizell recently addressed a common but stressful milestone for many families: deciding when and how to leave children home alone. In a new discussion focused on staying safe at home, Dizell outlined key considerations that parents should evaluate before making that decision.
According to Dizell, there is no single legal age that fits every child. Instead, parents must assess their child's maturity, judgment, and ability to handle unexpected situations. She emphasized that readiness varies greatly, even among siblings in the same household. A child who is responsible with homework may still panic during a power outage or a knock at the door.
Dizell recommends starting with short trial periods, such as a 30-minute trip to the grocery store. During this time, parents should observe how the child follows basic safety rules. She also stressed the importance of clear communication. Children should know exactly what to do if someone comes to the door, if the phone rings, or if they smell smoke. Having a written list of emergency contacts and practicing fire drills can reduce anxiety for both parent and child.
Another critical point is setting boundaries around technology and visitors. Dizell advises that children should never open the door to strangers or tell callers that they are alone. Parents should also establish rules about using the stove, microwaves, and other appliances.
Dizell reminds families that leaving a child home alone is a gradual process. It requires honest conversations, consistent check-ins, and a willingness to slow down if the child is not ready. The goal is not just to keep children physically safe, but to help them build confidence and good decision-making skills over time.
