In a sweeping move to regulate youth access to online platforms, Greece has unveiled a pioneering and controversial national system. The mandate, which will fully take effect in January 2027, prohibits children under the age of 15 from accessing social media without parental consent. The enforcement mechanism, however, is drawing significant attention for its approach.
Central to the plan is the government's endorsement of a specific parental control application, "Kids Wallet." The app will transition from a private parenting tool into an official state-recognized platform for digital age verification. Parents will be required to use the app to grant permission for their children to create social media accounts. This permission will be linked to a government-issued digital identity for the child, creating a centralized authentication process.
Proponents argue the measure is a necessary shield against online risks like cyberbullying and inappropriate content, giving parents a direct tool to oversee their children's digital entry. Critics, however, raise immediate concerns about privacy, data security, and government overreach. They question the implications of a private app becoming a compulsory gateway for youth internet access and warn of creating a surveillance infrastructure under the guise of protection.
The policy positions Greece at the forefront of a global debate, testing the balance between safeguarding minors and preserving digital freedoms. As the 2027 deadline approaches, the technical implementation and public response will be closely watched by policymakers worldwide.
