An Australian mother is urging parents to watch for a hidden danger that can strike long after the pool gates close. Gagan, who runs the parenting account "bornbeforewifii," shared a stark warning about "dry drowning" and "secondary drowning" after her own child experienced the frightening condition.
The phenomenon occurs when a small amount of water is inhaled during a swim, causing the airway to spasm or fluid to build up in the lungs over time. Symptoms can appear up to 24 hours later, often while the child is sleeping. Gagan described how her son seemed fine after his lesson, but later showed signs of trouble breathing, coughing, and extreme fatigue. She rushed him to the hospital, where doctors confirmed he had inhaled water.
The key warning signs include persistent coughing, rapid or shallow breathing, chest pain, vomiting, and unusual sleepiness. A child who "drowns" in their sleep may simply seem like they are resting, but their oxygen levels can drop dangerously. Gagan stressed that parents should not assume a child is just tired from swimming. If a child exhibits any of these symptoms after being in the water, they need immediate medical attention, not just rest.
This warning is not meant to scare families away from swimming, but to remind them that water safety does not end when the lesson is over. Vigilance in the hours after a swim can save a life.
