A New Jersey therapist is reminding parents that the return to the classroom can be a stressful time for kids, even when they do not show it. Jeff Deminski, a licensed counselor, says children frequently hide their school-related anxiety because they do not want to disappoint their parents. This hidden stress can show up as stomachaches, trouble sleeping, or sudden irritability, but many kids will not say the words "I am nervous."
Deminski suggests that parents start easing their children into the school routine well before the first bell rings. Shifting bedtime and wake-up times a few weeks early can make a big difference. He also encourages parents to check in with their kids regularly, not just with a quick "how was school" but with open-ended questions that invite real answers. Simple prompts like "what was the best part of your day" or "what felt hard today" can open the door to honest conversation.
The therapist notes that a little preparation goes a long way. Practicing the morning routine, visiting the school building if possible, and talking through what to expect can reduce the unknown. He also advises parents to watch for changes in behavior, as younger children may not have the words to describe their feelings. The goal, he says, is not to eliminate all anxiety but to help kids feel capable of handling it. With patience and a steady routine, the transition back to school can become a manageable part of the year.
