Teens Feel Insecure When Parents Scroll Instead of Listen

A new study suggests that teenagers who feel ignored by a parent constantly scrolling on a phone may develop a less secure bond with that parent. The research highlights a growing concern in the digital age: the impact of distracted parenting on adolescent relationships.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Calgary, surveyed over 1,000 teens aged 12 to 17. Participants reported how often their parents used smartphones during conversations or family time. Teens who said their parents frequently checked phones during interactions also reported feeling less close to those parents. They described their relationships as less trusting and less emotionally supportive.

One lead researcher noted that teens interpret a parent's phone use as a sign of disinterest. When a parent looks at a screen instead of making eye contact or responding to a question, the teen may feel devalued. Over time, this can erode the sense of security that young people need from their caregivers.

The findings add to a growing body of research on "technoference" -- the interruptions caused by technology in face-to-face interactions. Previous studies have linked parental phone use to behavioral issues in younger children. This new work extends those concerns into the teenage years.

Experts suggest simple fixes. Parents can set phone-free times during meals or conversations. They can also explain to their teens when they need to use a phone for work or an urgent call. The key, researchers say, is making sure teens know they are the priority. A quick glance at a notification may seem harmless, but for a teenager watching, it can feel like a clear message: the screen matters more than they do.
