Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has a parenting philosophy that might surprise some moms and dads. He believes that constantly smoothing the road for your children could actually hurt them in the long run. Instead of removing every obstacle, Khosrowshahi argues that letting kids face challenges is essential for their development.
In a recent interview, the father of three explained that his own upbringing taught him the value of struggle. He recalled how his parents, who were immigrants, did not shield him from difficulty. They let him figure things out on his own, which built resilience and problem-solving skills. Today, he worries that modern parents are too quick to intervene, whether it is finishing a child's homework, solving a social conflict, or stepping in when a task gets hard.
Khosrowshahi emphasized that failure is not something to avoid. It is a teacher. When children never experience setbacks, they miss out on learning how to bounce back. He noted that in the business world, the ability to handle rejection and adapt is far more valuable than a perfect track record. By protecting kids from every bump in the road, parents might be raising adults who struggle with uncertainty.
He did not claim to have all the answers. Parenting, he admitted, is a constant balancing act between support and letting go. But his core message was clear: a little hardship now can build the kind of character that lasts a lifetime. Sometimes the best thing a parent can do is step back and let the child find their own way through.
