Summer break gives children a chance to step away from homework and enjoy some free time. But without a plan, many kids end up glued to screens and let the weeks slip away. Brenen and Morgan Beeler share a few straightforward ideas to help parents keep their children engaged and make the most of the season.
First, set a loose daily routine. Kids do not need a strict school schedule, but having a consistent wake-up time and a few planned activities each morning can prevent the day from turning into a lazy blur. Second, encourage a morning goal. Whether it is reading a chapter, practicing an instrument, or doing a small chore, starting the day with a simple task builds momentum.
Third, limit screen time early. Letting kids watch videos or play games first thing often leads to hours of passive entertainment. Instead, push outdoor play or creative projects to the front of the day. Fourth, involve them in planning. Ask your children what they want to learn or try over the summer. When they have a say, they are more likely to stay interested.
Finally, model the behavior yourself. If parents spend the summer on their phones, kids will follow. Show them how to use free time for hobbies, reading, or family activities. A little structure goes a long way toward turning a long break into a season of growth and fun.
